For many patients, cataract surgery is a welcomed opportunity to regain clear, crisp vision. During the procedure, once the clouded lens of the eye is removed, an artificial lens is inserted in its place. While patients today have several options available to them in terms of the replacement lens, Mark Mandel, MD, wants patients to be aware of the unique benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens. Our team is ready to see you at one of our convenient locations in Hayward, Castro Valley, San Jose, and Concord. Contact our office at 877-210-2020 ext. 3 to schedule your consultation.
Ahead, Mark Mandel, MD, discusses how this leading-edge IOL helps patients achieve the best vision outcome possible.
What Sets the Light Adjustable Lens Apart from Others?
The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is unlike other intraocular lens options. Other IOLs are fixed to correct vision at specific set distances; monofocal IOLs are designed for one focusing distance and multifocal IOLs provide improved vision at distant and near ranges, for example. Unlike these and other standard IOLs, the premium LAL is adjustable after cataract surgery. These lenses are composed of a unique, photosensitive material that allows Mark Mandel, MD, to adjust the lens for you after your cataract surgery via special light treatment. This allows you to “preview” different vision outcomes before choosing the right one for you.
Why is this adjustability an asset? Simply put, patients must make several decisions regarding their desired vision outcome before even undergoing the surgery. Due to minor changes that occur during the healing of the eye, the standard IOL choice may make it difficult for a patient to achieve the 20/20 vision they desire. The LAL allows a patient’s eyes to heal completely before the patient has to choose the preferred vision outcome, translating to even better results for the patient.
Benefits of LAL
This FDA-approved lens boasts many benefits, including:
Reduced indecisiveness: Selecting the LAL can help ease the tough IOL decision-making process that comes with cataract surgery. Patients are not required to commit to a lens decision until after they have had the chance to preview several vision outcomes. This leaves them with peace of mind that the best decision was made.
Increased control over cataract surgery: The customization that accompanies the LAL allows patients to feel a larger sense of control over their cataract surgery.
Convenient adjustments: When it is time to have your LAL adjusted after your cataract surgery, the process is efficient, painless, and safe. Mark Mandel, MD, will work with you to determine the appropriate number of light treatments that will follow your surgery. Once the desired vision has been selected, the lens is targeted to ensure no further changes can be made, leaving you with excellent, lasting vision results.
