Refractive errors are a common type of vision problem that make it difficult to see clearly at certain distances. They occur when the shape of the eye does not allow light to correctly focus onto the retina. If you have this type of vision problem, you have likely considered your options for correction such as photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK. Mark Mandel, MD, has made a positive impact on many patients’ lives with advanced vision correction procedures. Learn more about the advantages of PRK below.
About the Procedure
PRK corrects refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, numbing eye drops will be used so that you remain comfortable for the duration of the treatment. Then, the outer layer of the cornea will be carefully removed before a laser is used to reshape the cornea. A contact lens will be placed into the eye as a protective layer as you heal. Patients are able to return home right after surgery but should have someone drive them.
PRK or LASIK? Which Is Right for Me?
Both PRK and LASIK are used to correct vision; they both reshape the cornea, which is the transparent front area of the eye. However, their methods vary greatly. LASIK achieves this via the creation of a corneal flap so that a laser beam can be delivered directly to the cornea. PRK does not require the creation of this flap, making it a more suitable option in certain situations, such as for those who lead an active or athletic lifestyle. The best way to know for sure which procedure is right for you is to schedule an appointment with Mark Mandel, MD, who will assess the health of your eyes and your surgical needs before providing the best recommendation for you.
Advantages of PRK
Clear vision: The most pronounced benefit of PRK is clear vision. After recovery, patients can experience freedom from glasses and contact lenses.
Safer for high-impact sports: Because there is no flap involved in PRK, there is no risk of it becoming dislodged in an injury. This is especially beneficial for those who participate in contact sports.
Suitable for those with thin corneas: Patients with thinner corneas may not be candidates for LASIK, but still desire a safe and effective vision correction solution. In these cases, PRK can be an excellent alternative.
